This paper reports the results of an exploratory study of some interreligious teaching projects carried out during the hours of teaching Catholic religion. The research highlights how both issues concerning critical knowledge on religions by contrasting religious illiteracy and specific issues of intercultural pedagogy such as welcoming others and contrasting stereotypes and prejudices have been addressed. At the same time, the paper reflects on some critical issues of religious teaching in Italy due
perhaps to its function in school and to disciplinary epistemology. In fact, it is believed that in the light of several European studies and the data that emerged in this research, a change in the status of the discipline is necessary.
To prove the following, the article proposes a new didactic and pedagogical-social investigation, so as to provide political and ecclesiastical decision-makers with new food for thought for a renewal of religious teaching in school.
